The Best Cure For Depression

The best cure for depression that I have found is being forgiven for my sin, walking in the Spirit and living in the Spirit. And the root cause of depression is unforgiven sin. When I walk in the Spirit I am joyful and when I sin I am often depressed.

Galatians 5:22a: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, . . .

Hmm . . . joy.

Luke 3:16: John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

2 Corinthians 1:21-22: Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Galatians 5:16, 25: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. . . . 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

When we receive Jesus, He baptizes us with the Holy Spirit. Because one fruit of the Spirit is joy, since I received Jesus and He gave me the Holy Spirit, He has given me a far superior joy to what I had before. He has certainly cured most of my depression. There is a sense in which, when He baptized me with the Holy Spirit, He also baptized me with joy and sealed me with joy. When I sin, the joy goes away. I can ask forgiveness for my sin and like King David, have the joy restored.

1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Psalms 51:1b-2, 8, 10-12 : Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. . . . 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. . . . 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

I find joy in fellowshipping with other Spirit-indwelt believers in Christ. It is a bit like multiplying the presence of the Holy Spirit and the joy. My joy is reduced somewhat when I am among Christians that are not walking in the Spirit or when I am in the company of unbelievers that are devoid of the Holy Spirit. That is not an excuse not to love them and witness to them. And we obtain the greatest and purest joy when we fellowship with God Himself and serve Him.

1 John 1:3: That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

J. Vernon McGee believed and often said that if we could lead all the patients in mental hospitals to Christ we could just about empty them out. He believed and I do, that many patients went into the hospitals in the first place because they had rejected Christ or because they had never received Him.
